Photographs from the series «Konstruktionen»
Claude Lévi-Strauss’s famous formula “La pensée sauvage”,
the “Savage Mind’” has been a long-lasting fascination for me.
He opposes the ‘bricoleur’ to the ‘engineer’, (the true
craftsman). The engineer stands for the scientific mind while
‘bricoleur’ personifies the ‘savage mind’. A mind which
the inventively combines the fragments and scraps of reality
immediately available to its perception in order to devise a
particular world of notions. All creatures, things and
phenomena are bound together in a magical correlation where
everything has an equal value.
A temporary order is achieved through constant combinations
only to be challenged by new associations of ideas. It is an
universal type of thinking and attaining knowledge, existing
parallelly to the scientific one.

The subject of this photography series are fragile, temporary
constructions, which I assemble from materials at hand in my
studio. Build from thin, flexible rods, light paper and glass,
positioned near a south facing window, they act as ‘traps for the
light’. A light which moves and varies as hours go by. Once
photographed, the constructions return to their primary state of
heaps of inanimate things.

A special moment is singled out of the flow of time and
offered for contemplation.
